How To: DIY Stoney Clover Pouches Two Ways January 11, 2022
I love little pouches. They make organizing your bags, your purse, or your car so much easier. Yes, I have pouches in my car that I keep in my console with various necessitates in each one. Does this mean I have my ishh together? Absolutely not. But it certainly makes me feel like I do a tad bit more.
Raise your hand if you’ve seen a Stoney Clover Bag, fell in love, then saw the price tag and exited out real quick… Raised yours? Okay, then you are right there with me. I absolutely love these bags, but haven’t been able to justify the price tag on them yet. So….I decided to go the DIY route. Follow along, because trust me – this is the easiest DIY ever.
Let’s go over the basics.
For this DIY you will need a few things:
1 // patches of your choice (I will link some great sources below)
2 // a bag of your choice (tote or pouch, I’ve done both)
3 // glue (only for non-adhesive patches)
Types of Patches
There are two types of patches out there, so make sure when you are purchasing your patches (especially those from Amazon) that you read all the details so you are buying the correct patches.
Adhesive Patches vs Non-adhesive patches
These are the two types of patches. Adhesive patches are patches that have a sticker backing to them. So depending on the pouch material, these are the easiest and quickest to use. When using the adhesive, you literally just need to peel the backing off, then place on your bag where your want it. Press down on it good to make sure it sticks. If you are worried, you can always use a thread and needle to sew a few various spots. I don’t know how to do this, so the sticker will do for me. Note: I did a quilted tote bag this way a over a year ago, and the patches still haven’t budged.
Non-adhesive patches are patches that do not have the adhesive backing. These can be applied two ways – Iron on or with a heavy glue. The glue you use depends on the material you use.
How I applied the patches
When I was buying patches for these four pouches, I really wanted to use adhesive patches. But I mistakenly bought the non-adhesive. Both work great and are great options. It just depends on your project and how you prefer to apply the patch or patches. For these pouches, Iron on would not work as it would be hard to use an iron on these smaller pouches. I used two different glues – for the faux leather bags, I used E6000 glue. You have to press down for a few seconds to make sure it sticks good. You may also need to use a toothpick or a q-tip to wipe any excess glue around the letters from pressing down. If you do this, it will look clean like you didn’t even glue anything. Give it about 10 minutes to dry and you are set. For the shearling bag, I used Krazy glue. I used this glue for these bags because even though it’s also a heavy duty glue, it didn’t need much for it to stick to the shearling material. This glue was a little easier to handle than the E6000 for this bag material.
Where to purchase the patches
1 // Etsy – this is a great resource. If you want to make sure they don’t take weeks to deliver to you, filter your search to make sure it’s shipping from the US.
2 // Amazon – of course with anything on Amazon, just make sure you really read the description to make sure you are buying what you need + the right amount. If you need multiple of one letter, on Amazon the letters only come in packs of the 26 letter alphabet, so you will need to purchase multiple packs depending on what letters you need. On Etsy you can buy induvial letters. So Etsy may be more cost effective depending on what you are doing. Shop my favorite amazon patch finds here.
3 // Stoney Clover – Yes, you can purchase patches from Stoney Clover and apply them yourself. They are more expensive, but if you are only using one or two patches, this isn’t a bad option. I used their pearl letters to make a bag once with my initials “KP”. All of their patches are adhesive. They also have lots of fun symbols & things.
