How To DIY: Floating Acrylic Frame For A Swaddle August 11, 2022
If there’s one thing my husband knows about me, it’s that I have expensive taste. Because of that, when it comes to our home, I always have a DIY project for him, I mean us. When it came to our decorating and designing our nursery, there was no shortage of DIY projects for us.
I always loved this swaddle. But the swaddle was so pretty, it wasn’t one that I actually wanted to use. When I first saw it, I envisioned having it framed to put over his crib. Little did I realize, that having it framed was no cheap feat. Especially since it was a larger piece & I wanted it framed in an acrylic floating frame. I called several local framing places & none of them framed anything in acrylic and when searching online, all the frames in the size I needed were very expensive. So to make my dream come true, l did all the research on the best way to DIY it. Let me tell you, it was inexpensive + fairly easy to do!
Here are all the steps on how to DIY a floating acrylic frame + the materials needed.
Materials Needed:
- artwork of choice
- acrylic/plexiglass – you can get this at a local hardware store. We went to Ace Hardware and had them cut to the dimensions needed.
- hardware – gold standoff screws (here are some options/examples – one, two, three)
- double sided tape – holds artwork in place. We used this.
- Drill
How to create the frame & insert artwork:
1 // Gather all your materials and make sure your artwork is ready. I framed a swaddle, so I had to make sure it was ironed/steamed first. The swaddle was 28″ x 28″ so we had the acrylic cut to 30″ x 30″ to leave two inches on each side. You can cut this yourself, but we found it much easier to have the people at our local hardware store cut it for us to the dimensions we needed.
2 // Before putting your artwork in, measure out on the acrylic where your holes need to be on each corner. Drill through the acrylic with your drill. But be careful and don’t go too fast so you don’t crack the acrylic. We stacked the two pieces of acrylic together and I held them in place while my husband drilled the holes so we could make sure the holes lined up perfectly.
3// After your drill all the holes, put your artwork in between the frames. Depending on what you are framing, you may not need to secure it in place, but since we were framing a swaddle, I didn’t want to take the chance of it moving between the two pieces of acrylic. To secure it, we put a small piece of double sided fabric tape on each corner and attached it to the back piece of acrylic.
4// Once it’s placed where you want it, stack the top piece of acrylic on top the artwork.
5// Put the gold screws in each corner. Once it’s secured, hang the frame where needed & enjoy your beautiful DIY framed art!
